CYBERJAYA, July 21 (Bernama) -- Kuih penyaram, which is sweetened with gula apong and a famous Sarawak delicacy, was in high demand at today's people's carnival held in conjunction with the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2024.
Kuching Eatery proprietor Aiza Zawawai, 36, explained that they were sold out shortly after being removed from the frying pan.
"We didn't fry too many kuih in the morning because we want buyers to enjoy them while they're still hot. The kuih was made with gula apong, which was specially brought from Sarawak.
"Gula apong has a less sweet taste compared to regular sugar, making more people appreciate the flavour of our kuih penyaram," she told Bernama at the Bumi Kenyalang booth.
Gula apong is also a key ingredient in desserts such as ice cream, which is popular among locals and tourists visiting Sarawak.
Aiza said she ventured into the food business after moving to Cyberjaya six years ago due to frequent inquiries about traditional Sarawakian dishes including mi kolok, Laksa Sarawak and kek lapis from friends and acquaintances.
"I thought, why not take the opportunity to not only make it a source of income but also to introduce authentic food from my home state," she added.
