ALOR GAJAH, July 26 (Bernama) --  The establishment of the Tuah Research Institute (IKAT) is seen as a catalyst for attracting more researchers to contribute ideas towards the ongoing study of legendary Malay warrior Hang Tuah, conducted by the state government in collaboration with Universiti Islam Melaka (UNIMEL).

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said this follows the state government’s efforts in appointing 10 researchers and historians and organising the Hang Tuah Exhibition at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) from June 10 to July 28.

“This is a positive leap for the state government as a hub for historical, cultural, political and social education, which simultaneously strengthens the preservation and conservation of heritage for future generations.

“I hope IKAT will play a proactive role in conducting research to correct the history that has been distorted and concealed by colonialists,” he said the launch of ISRA Corner, the opening of the Tuah Research Institute, and the signing of the letter of intent in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of UNIMEL in Kuala Sungai Baru here today.

Head of Hang Tuah Research and UNIMEL vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Taib Dora, told reporters that the establishment of the Hang Tuah Chair is the best platform to bring in more researchers from both local and international backgrounds.

He said this was one of the three initiatives that IKAT will undertake to focus on the role of Hang Tuah during the 15th century Malacca Sultanate era.

“We established the Hang Tuah Chair because it will have research funding and is capable of financing various studies to be conducted by interested researchers.

“In addition, we will offer study programmes related to Hang Tuah at the Master's and PhD levels and collaborate with overseas universities in countries like India, Thailand, Turkiye and Indonesia, which Hang Tuah visited, to bring more researchers into this study,” he said.
