Bernama, MPI Form Partnership To Enhance Journalism Training, Courses

05/08/2024 08:32 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) are set to explore a strategic collaboration to offer training and courses in journalism in an effort to nurture more talent in the field.

According to Bernama Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, the collaboration will highlight and enhance various journalism courses and training, including those related to artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

“We have agreed to collaborate in offering courses to diploma-level students who are keen to explore and gain a deeper insight into journalism.

“With the expertise of MPI’s teaching staff and the energy and talent at Bernama, we see an opportunity for collaboration. We will discuss this further and hope to implement it in the future,” she said after a meeting with MPI at Wisma Bernama today.

Also present were Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and deputy editor-in-chief (New Services) Nasriah Darus. MPI’s delegation included president Datuk Yong Soo Heong and CEO Datuk Mustapa Omar.

Elaborating, Nur-ul Afida said that in journalism, the needs and application of AI technology vary by level, so training and courses should be more specialised and and no longer limited to basic concepts.

She said that, in line with Bernama’s role as the national news agency, the courses and training will also incorporate values and ethics in journalism.

Meanwhile, Yong expressed optimism that, with the combined expertise of MPI and Bernama, they will be able to provide top-notch training and courses for both new talent and established journalists.

To develop new journalism talent and strengthen the skills of existing journalists, he highlighted that MPI must continually pursue strategic collaborations to provide training modules tailored to the the increasingly challenging industry.

“For instance, AI technology is crucial for boosting journalists’ productivity and news production, but human elements, such as news writing skills and ethics, remain fundamental.

“In this regard, it is essential for MPI to explore collaborative efforts, especially with Bernama, to offer training relevant to the industry’s needs,” he said.
