Proposed Malaysia Harmony Charter To Be Presented To Cabinet Soon - Mohd Na’im

09/08/2024 04:32 PM

BANGI, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- The proposed Malaysia Harmony Charter will soon be brought up and discussed at the Cabinet meeting, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

He said that the proposed charter would next be presented to the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) and the Conference of Rulers for approval.

“Yesterday, the proposal for the Malaysia Harmony Charter was brought before the Inter-Faith Harmony Committee (Harmoni) meeting, which National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and I co-chaired.

“The proposal has been unanimously approved and, insya-Allah, will be brought to the Cabinet Meeting for a policy decision,” he told reporters after addressing the monthly assembly agencies under the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) here today.

Mohd Na’im said the charter was developed collaboratively by Islamic scholars and experts from other faiths in the country, with the aim of fostering respect and harmony among people of diverse racial backgrounds.

Yesterday, the media reported that the Harmoni meeting had approved the proposed Malaysia Harmony Charter as a medium for unity and harmony among Malaysians.

The charter encompasses six principles, 12 harmony values, 32 guidelines, and nine directions, and will contain a guideline covering permissible and avoidable matters in strengthening relations among the country’s multi-ethnic, religious and cultural society.

In another development, Mohd Na’im said the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) will leave it to the police to carry out an investigation into allegations of activities promoting Christianity in front of a surau near the Stadthuys building in Banda Hilir, Melaka, last month.

“I was made to understand that a police report has been filed, so I believe it is best to leave it to the authorities to investigate,” he said, adding that Jakim would not remain silent if there is evidence of any disrespect towards the sanctity of Islam.

Previously, a 16-second video on TikTok went viral, showing a group of individuals promoting 'Free Bible Courses' in front of Surau Warisan, a popular tourist area.

The video raised questions about the intentions and appropriateness of the group’s activities promoting the Bible in front of a Muslim place of worship.
