Taarana School Launches Zero Waste Programme To Foster Sustainability, Inclusivity

PETALING JAYA, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Taarana School, a dedicated centre for children with cognitive and sensory challenges, has launched the ‘Zero Waste @ Taarana’ programme, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and aimed at educating students about conservation and recycling.

This initiative, which focuses on ecological education, skill development, social inclusion, and sustainable practices, also equips Taarana’s neurodivergent students with a foundation for future jobs in the field.

During the recent launch event, Taarana’s principal, Dr Sunitha Sivakumaran, expressed her enthusiasm for the programme.

She said that at Taarana, they believe in nurturing not only the intellectual and emotional development of their students but also their sense of responsibility towards the world around them.

“This project is a testament to our commitment to creating a sustainable future for our students and community.”

“Although it is primarily targeted at our older pre-vocational students, this initiative also reflects our efforts to instil environmental awareness and responsibility in our younger students, fostering a culture of sustainability from an early age,” she said.

Chairperson of RYTHM Foundation Datin Sri Umayal Eswaran, who launched the event, told reporters that through the programme, they were advancing environmental sustainability while championing inclusivity and recognising the invaluable contributions of the special needs community.

“This initiative not only empowers Taarana’s students but also fosters a society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can integrate without judgment or preconceived notions. 

“It embodies our commitment to a more inclusive and sustainable future,” she said.

She added that in addition to focusing on sustainability, the programme is designed to serve as a model of inclusivity, showcasing how tailored educational approaches can lead to meaningful outcomes for students with diverse needs.

Umayal said the school specialises in providing quality education and resources for children with special education needs. 

The school’s primary objective is to unlock each child’s potential through meticulously structured academic and therapy programs, empowering them to become active and valued members of their communities, she said.

She added that Taarana’s dedicated teachers and therapists work in close partnership with parents to create personalised education and therapy plans that cater to each child’s unique abilities.

Beyond academic achievement, she explained the school is cherished as a secure, inclusive, and nurturing environment for both children and their families.
