IPOH, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and Enggang Keramat Automotive Sdn Bhd (EKA) have established a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the adoption of sustainable energy and electric vehicle (EV) technology in Malaysia.
In a statement today, UTP said that the collaboration marks a pivotal milestone in UTP’s journey to become a leading institution in EV research and development.
It also aligns with Malaysia's broader goal of achieving a low-carbon future and supports UTP's commitment to becoming a low-carbon campus by promoting sustainable energy and clean transportation, the statement read.
A memorandum of understanding was signed by UTP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib and EKA founder Datuk Fauziah Alias to formalise the partnership.
The statement said central to the collaboration are three key initiatives, with the first being the development of off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) panels integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS) for the UTP campus to generate and store clean energy.
Secondly, EKA will operate electric buses for UTP's internal transportation needs, contributing to a greener campus environment and showcasing the potential of EV technology for green mobility.
Thirdly, UTP and EKA will establish a world-class Centre of Excellence for Electrical Vehicles (COEEV) to conduct cutting-edge research, develop innovative EV technologies and offer industry-leading training and certification programmes to support the growth of the EV industry.
“This partnership is a catalyst for groundbreaking research in the EV sector, and we are excited to lead the way in developing innovative solutions. By combining UTP's research capabilities with EKA's industry expertise, we will create a robust ecosystem for EV technology development in Malaysia,” Mohamed Ibrahim was quoted as saying in the statement.
The statement also stated the collaboration is expected to generate significant economic and environmental benefits, including job creation, technology transfer and reduced carbon emissions, in line with the Malaysian government’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) 2023.
The partnership will also address the growing demand for skilled EV professionals through the development of industry-certified training programmes, it said.
“This strategic alliance between UTP and EKA represents a significant step forward in Malaysia’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
“By combining academic excellence with industry expertise, the partnership will accelerate the development and deployment of EV technologies, fostering a sustainable and resilient future for the nation,” it added.
