PETRA Hands Over Three Completed Projects To Terengganu Govt

19/08/2024 04:32 PM

DUNGUN, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) today handed over three completed projects to the Terengganu state government with a combined value of RM141.27 million.

Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said they include flood mitigation projects in Guntung Luar, Setiu and Gong Kiat, Kuala Terengganu, as well as the Sungai Paka Estuary Conservation Project, which were executed by PETRA through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

“This handover demonstrates the federal government’s confidence and ability to complete projects that benefit the public.

“The flood mitigation projects completed in 2022 successfully resolved flooding issues in the areas, providing relief and protection to nearly 3,500 residents and ensuring that their economic and social activities are no longer disrupted,” he said.

He made this remark during a press conference at the project handover ceremony here, where the Terengganu government was represented by state Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee deputy chairman Mohd Zawawi Ismail.

Akmal Nasrullah also highlighted that the Sungai Paka Estuary Conservation Project, completed last year, has not only tackled erosion and coastal flooding issues affecting 1,000 residents but also safeguarded at least 110 fishing boats from shallow estuary conditions and wave impacts.

He added that PETRA currently has 23 ongoing projects in Terengganu under DID, with a total cost of RM2.4 billion, which require close cooperation with the state government.

He explained that 18 projects are continuations, while five are new, focusing on flood mitigation, coastal erosion and riverbank rehabilitation, and drainage systems.

“One such project is the Sabo Dam infrastructure in Hulu Terengganu. Although this upstream area has no coastline, it has experienced flooding, and debris flood threats still exist.

“Therefore, the ministry has approved this project for this year, which is currently at the pre-implementation stage, with an estimated total cost of RM30 million. I anticipate physical work to commence next year,” he added.
