KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The Public Works Department (JKR) has integrated Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology into 455 projects, spanning various stages of planning, design and construction, between 2021 and 2024, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said the JKR Strategic Plan 2021-2025 aims to implement BIM in 90 per cent of projects valued above RM10 million.
“This commitment highlights our dedication to efficiency, precision and sustainability in our projects. For us to fully capitalise on the benefits of BIM, it is essential for contractors and consultants in Malaysia to integrate this technology into their projects and organisations.
“This will help us remain competitive under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), where foreign contractors and consultants can bid on Malaysian tenders and vice versa,” he said at Autodesk Design & Make ASEAN Summit 2024 here today.
He said by adopting BIM and other advanced methodologies, the local industry can enhance its capabilities, improve project outcomes and maintain a competitive edge in the global market.
BIM is a holistic process of creating and managing information for a built asset, based on an intelligent three-dimensional model. It is enabled by a cloud platform since BIM integrates structured, multi-disciplinary data to produce a digital representation of an asset across its lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and operations.
Nanta said that during the National Development Action Council meeting on June 7, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government would be implementing the BIM for both government and private sector projects.
“The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of addressing project completion delays and highlighted the need to overcome these challenges by incorporating new technologies into our processes. The adoption of BIM is a critical step towards enhancing efficiency, accuracy and overall project success,” he said.
