JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- To fuel the spirit of National Day, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Taman Pelangi Indah here took an initiative to produce a 20x10 metre (m) Jalur Gemilang to be flown majestically at its premises.

Almost 200 individuals from the school, including teachers, staff, students, cleaners and security officers, came together to produce the flag within 23 days.

School principal A Kumaran said the process, which began on July 9, was carried out in seven phases of work using three sewing machines, two edge sewing machines as well as hand sewing.

“This flag was not only produced manually but included the use of computing so that it could be done according to specifications including to ensure the size and pattern were correct," he told Bernama when met at the school here today.

He said making the flag involved 332 m of cloth, weighing almost 50 kilogrammes, and done by teachers and staff, and assisted by the students.

“The seven phases involved cutting and stitching the different coloured fabrics, making the moon and star, and then joining all the strips of colour fabrics together,” he said.

Kumaran said the idea to work on making the giant flag came about because he wanted to come up with something different in conjunction with this National Day celebration, apart from installing the normal-sized Jalur Gemilang around the school as usual.

According to him, parents and the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) donated towards the initiative while the Johor Education Department and Pasir Gudang District Education Office supported the idea and contributed in terms of information.

He hopes that the effort to produce the giant flag will serve as a precious memory to all school members, and will create team spirit and unity among them.

"If previously not everyone was involved in big projects in the school, this time around everyone was involved,” he also said.

"In the future, we may continue this kind of an effort and put up a giant flag outside (the school), so all the local community can see it," he added.
