National Art Gallery Advances Decentralisation To Celebrate Local Art Communities

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- The National Art Gallery is advancing its decentralisation initiatives to celebrate art within local communities and foster a creative, productive society.

In a statement today, the National Art Gallery announced that this move aligned with the seven core principles outlined in the National Cultural Policy (DAKEN) 2021.

“Since its establishment in 1958, the National Art Gallery has been a leading centre for visual arts in Malaysia, playing a crucial role in collecting, showcasing, promoting, preserving, and restoring artworks.

“As an institution dedicated to enhancing the nation’s visual arts, the National Art Gallery remains committed to providing the best experience for visitors and is highly dedicated to offering various platforms for local artists,” read the statement, issued in conjunction with the 66th anniversary of the National Art Gallery today.

Over more than six decades since its inception, the National Art Gallery has achieved numerous milestones, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and local artists.

The statement also noted that the National Art Gallery had now amassed over 5,000 pieces in its national visual art collection.

“As an institution responsible for the preservation and conservation of artworks, the success of the National Art Gallery is evident in the establishment of the National Art Repository and Conservation Centre, also known as the ‘Art Hospital.’

“This centre further strengthens the gallery's existing responsibilities in managing art collections and conservation, while providing advisory services, restoration, and storage for artworks to the public,” it added.

Additionally, the National Art Gallery’s commitment to promoting the arts is underscored by the opening of its branch in Langkawi, Kedah, which offers more opportunities for local artists to create and provides advisory services.

The gallery also plans to continue this effort with the establishment of another branch in Ipoh, Perak, expected to commence operations next year. This initiative is part of a strategy to rejuvenate artistic activities in Perak and boost tourism to the state.

“This 66th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate achievements and reinforce our commitment to advancing the nation’s art ecosystem.

“The National Art Gallery extends its highest appreciation and gratitude to all visitors, artists, and partners who have continually supported us,” the statement concluded.
