Renewable Energy Transition At KHTP Can Be An Example For Other Industrial Parks

KULIM, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- The renewable energy transition efforts implemented at the Kulim High Technology Park (KHTP) can be made an example for industrial technology parks nationwide.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the initiatives at KHTP align with the aspiration to achieve net-zero carbon emissions as early as 2050, in line with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

"In the global energy landscape, countries with rapidly developing economies have begun to encourage energy transitions effectively.

“According to the World Economic Forum's report, Fostering Effective Energy Transition 2023, China, India, Brazil, and our neighbouring Indonesia, are among the leading nations showing significant progress in energy transition," he said.

Fadillah, also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), said this in his speech at the launch of NUR Power Sdn Bhd’s 90MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine Power Station here today.

He said many countries have shifted their focus towards energy security by prioritising supply assurance, setting aside equity, and implementing faster and more inclusive transitions for more sustainable, secure, and equitable energy.

However, Fadillah emphasised that the directions outlined in NIMP 2030 and the NETR would remain mere policies if not supported by industry players.

He said the government's future policies and directions would be anchored on a balanced energy transition that needs to be managed effectively.

"The energy transition will be a key focus across various sectors, including Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), which will promote renewable energy, innovation, and energy efficiency while ensuring that the transition benefits all segments of society," he said.

Meanwhile, Fadillah said the launch of NUR Power's open cycle gas turbine today will generate up to 90MW, in addition to the existing 220MW generation capacity, to meet the growing electricity demand at KHTP.

Large-scale, high-tech investments at KHTP can only be realised with a consistent and reliable energy supply to support their operations, he said.

This, he said, included the investment by German giant Infineon Technologies AG, which recently increased its investment by €5 billion (approximately RM30.1 billion) for the second phase of the construction of a 200-millimetre silicon carbide power fabrication plant at KHTP.

"With the establishment of this new power station, I am confident that KHTP will remain the top choice for investors, offering world-class infrastructure, energy efficiency, and competitive tariffs in the peninsula," he said.

At the event, Fadillah also witnessed the exchange of documents between NUR Power and UEM Lestra Bhd, a subsidiary of UEM Group Bhd, where UEM Lestra acquired up to 51 per cent stake in NUR Power.

Also present were Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, NUR Power chairman  Datuk Mohd Sidek Ahmad and its managing director Ikwan Hafiz Jamaludin.
