Media Should Collaborate With Tech Companies To Combat AI-driven Misinformation - Expert

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance and offer exciting possibilities for enhancing journalism, it also brings new challenges, particularly in the areas of disinformation and fake news.

Given AI's ability to create highly realistic but false content, American technologist and national security expert Doowan Lee said that media organisations around the world, including the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), can play a crucial role in combating AI-driven misinformation by collaborating with technology companies.

Lee, the Chief Strategy Officer of Edge Theory, an AI-native narrative intelligence company based in the United States, said that many tech companies are eager to hold symposiums or workshops on AI for media personnel, as this also provides additional exposure for their platforms.

“I think this is also what the Ukrainian government and the Taiwanese have done really well, working closely with their media organisations to bring in tech companies, civil society organisations and government stakeholders as well.

“It's also important that you get to learn from the individual, the actual people who are doing this (from tech companies). Building the connection is key to accelerating this kind of endeavour,” said Lee, who is also a member of the Social Media Task Force at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

Lee was speaking to Bernama after giving a briefing on “Artificial Intelligence, Disinformation, and Social Resilience” at Wisma Bernama here today, which was jointly organised by Bernama and the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 71 Bernama staff and journalists participated in the two-hour programme, which discussed information integrity in the era of AI, the negative influence of AI on social media and strategies to promote media integrity.
