Nga Congratulates Ipoh For Winning UN Habitat Scroll Of Honour Award

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming today congratulates the Ipoh City Council and key partners for being awarded the 2024 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for the Ipoh Doughnut Economics programme.

In a statement today, he said this prestigious award highlights Malaysia’s remarkable strides in sustainable urban development on the global stage.

“The Ipoh City Council’s achievement is a proud moment for our nation, showcasing our commitment to sustainable and inclusive urban solutions,” he said

He also lauded this achievement as a testament to the success of collaborative public-private partnerships. 

The Ipoh Doughnut Economics programme is a joint initiative involving Sunway University’s Sunway Centre for Planetary Health (SCPH), Institut Darul Ridzuan (IDR), People of Remarkable Talent (PORT), and the Ipoh City Council.

Launched in March 2023 with a grant from Yayasan Hasanah, the programme aims to transform Ipoh into a regenerative “Doughnut City” focusing on sustainable development.

According to the statement, Malaysia is actively pursuing the presidency of UN-Habitat Assembly for the 2026 to 2029 term, reinforcing its dedication to advancing global urban development and sustainability.

In July, Nga shared that the Chinese officials, during the bilateral meeting in conjunction with the ASEAN-China Ministerial Roundtable Meeting on Construction and Housing (ACMROCH), expressed support for Malaysia’s nomination for the position.
