PETRONAS BeDigital Bootcamp empowers Southern Region Students With Essential Digital Skills

06/09/2024 10:57 AM

MELAKA, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- A total of 100 final-year students from five public universities in the southern region had the opportunity to enhance their digital skills after being selected to join the PETRONAS BeDigital Bootcamp here.

PETRONAS Project Delivery and Technology senior vice president Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof said the programme, hosted in the southern region for the first time since its launch in 2022, is part of the multinational oil and gas company’s ongoing efforts to develop human capital in line with the country’s digital economy goals.

“The main objective of this 12-day programme is to help final-year university students prepare for entering the workforce, which is increasingly driven by digitalisation.

“We believe it is crucial to enhance their capabilities and skills as they prepare to face the realities of the digital and information technology-related job market,” he said at the closing ceremony of the PETRONAS BeDigital Bootcamp: Empowering Digital Skills Among Students in the Southern Region, in Ayer Keroh here.

Mohd Yusri hoped the programme would empower future graduates from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi MARA to master core digital skills, digital entrepreneurship, career fundamentals and design thinking while fostering a forward-thinking community of techno-digital leaders.

He said 762 students from 22 universities have benefitted from the programme to date.

“The final leg of this year’s programme will be held in the northern region, where another 100 participants will be selected from local universities. We are continuously improving the programme through discussions with strategic partners, including increasing the number of companies interested in offering job opportunities,” he added.

Meanwhile, the programme’s best female participant, Aleeyah Nur Sabrina Dzuren, 23, said the bootcamp had broadened her perspective and enhanced her digital skills.

“I saw fellow participants stepping out of their comfort zones, and this programme certainly gave us an extraordinary experience, especially during interview sessions, CV preparation, and exposure to AI (artificial intelligence),” said the UTM Skudai student.

The best male participant, Khairul Irfan Mohamed Ismail, 24, described the BeDigital Bootcamp as a golden opportunity to gain knowledge, particularly in improving technical and soft skills to prepare for the professional world.

“The programme also provided us with the opportunity to gain employment with major companies. The modules were highly relevant to my academic background, especially cybersecurity and AI,” said the final-year computer science student.
