MELAKA, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Youth and Sports Department is targeting the participation of approximately 129,000 people in this year’s National Sports Day, with various programmes to be held at the district and state levels.
State Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Datuk VP Shanmugam said the programmes would commence from Oct 11 across all districts, with the main celebration scheduled for Oct 13 at the Proclamation of Independence Memorial in Banda Hilir.
“This year, the opening ceremony of the state-level National Sports Day, themed #Cergas Bersama, will take place in the evening for the first time.
“There are over 20 planned activities, including running, aerobics, traditional sports, extreme sports, and recreational events,” he told a press conference at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh today.
Earlier, he officiated the Pre-Launch Ceremony of National Sports Day 2024 in conjunction with the state-level Masters Sports Programme, with Melaka Youth and Sports Department director Mohamad Mazlan Anis also present.
Shanmugan also said that in conjunction with the National Sports Day festivities, the state government would organise the Melaka Games 2024, involving participants from all 28 state constituencies.
“We are introducing a new event, snooker, alongside last year’s sports, namely football, futsal, sepak takraw, netball and basketball,” he said.
