JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- The state government, through the Johor Bahru District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD), will take immediate action to transfer the contaminated chemical waste from the Tiong Nam Industrial Area to a treatment facility.
State Health and Environment Committee chairman, Ling Tian Soon, emphasised that ensuring the safety and well-being of the public remains a priority in addressing this incident.
"The public is advised not to panic. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Johor Department of Environment (DOE) at 1-800-88-2727 or the Johor Bahru Disaster Operations Control Room at 07-2200604, so that immediate action can be taken.
"At the same time, we strongly condemn the actions of those involved who resorted to this illegal disposal of chemical waste," he said in a Facebook post today.
He noted that the case is being investigated under Section 34B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, which carries mandatory imprisonment and a maximum fine of RM10 million upon conviction.
Yesterday, the media reported that the DOE and the state Fire and Rescue Department discovered suspicious chemicals dumped along the banks of the Sungai Plentong tributary in the Tropika Industrial Area, Johor Jaya.
Ling was quoted as saying that there was an oil spill on the surface of the river, and samples have been taken, with partial cleanup of the spill conducted using absorbent pads.
