LABUAN, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- Three students from Labuan International School (LIS) have earned national recognition for their exceptional contribution to climate action.

Nur Hanis Batrisyia Ben Har, Jayden Tan Jiing Hao and Aireena Melissa Mohamad Syazwuan were announced as the Best in Malaysia in the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Learner Award 2024 for Action on Climate Change.

LIS principal Fadlin Aimuni said the prestigious award, which was presented by Cambridge University Press and Assessment, was announced to LIS on Sept 5.

“As a reward for their efforts, each student will receive a US$200 voucher, and they have been invited to attend the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 28 to give a speech,” she said to Bernama today.

She said the Cambridge IGCSE Learner Award 2024: Action on Climate Change aims to recognise students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to tackling the global climate crisis.

She said the award focuses on students' academic, extracurricular and community efforts to understand and address climate change.

“Through this initiative, students are encouraged to engage deeply with the causes and effects of climate change. and to explore potential solutions.

“The programme also promotes sustainable behaviours within schools and local communities, contributing to broader environmental preservation efforts,” she said.

The IGCSE is an internationally recognised qualification, similar to the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) in the United Kingdom, and is highly regarded in many countries around the world.

Fadlin Aimuni also said the achievement by Nur Hanis, Jayden, and Aireena underscores the increasing role of young people in driving climate awareness and action.

“Their efforts have set a strong example for their peers, demonstrating how education and initiative can lead to impactful change,” she added.
