SIPITANG, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- A total of 4,629 existing transmission towers across Sabah have been upgraded under the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA), ensuring enhanced internet connectivity and services for the benefit of the people.

In a statement today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said 303,569 premises are set to receive fibre optic connections through JENDELA.

“In addition, Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) via satellite has been implemented at 138 locations throughout the state,” MCMC informed.

It also said that Proof of Concept (POC) trials for the Starlink broadband are ongoing in remote and rural areas, with devices already installed at two locations in Papar, two in Keningau, two in Tawau and one each in Kudat, Ranau, Tuaran and Nabawan.

“These Starlink POC installations will help assess the feasibility of using satellite broadband to meet the various connectivity needs outlined under JENDELA,” the statement read.

MCMC also said that 118 National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) are operational across Sabah, with 14 more centres set to be established.

“To further empower communities and ensure equal access and opportunities, NADI's initiatives now focus on five key areas: Entrepreneurship, Lifelong Learning, Self-Wellness, Awareness and Government Initiatives,” it said.

Earlier today, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil visited Kampung Mondikot in Papar to assess the progress of the Starlink POC project.

He also attended the Community Day programme at NADI Mesapol and reviewed the development of JENDELA communication towers in Kampung Menengah Ulu Sipitang, MCMC said.

Present were Sipitang MP Datuk Matbali Musah, Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob and Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.
