MELAKA, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Kite Flyers Association (MPM) remains dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of kite flying, particularly traditional wau, to the younger generation through various initiatives such as workshops and kite festivals.

Its president Datuk Abd Rahim Nin said these efforts not only spark interest among youths but also ensure that the art of kite flying and wau-making endures, safeguarding this invaluable cultural legacy.

“Kite flying, especially wau, plays a significant role in showcasing the cultural identity and heritage of different states and nations to a wider audience.

“Wau-making workshops also offer participants the chance to discover hidden talents while creating an income stream, as each wau can fetch thousands of ringgit,” he told reporters at Pantai Klebang when met at the Melaka International Kite Festival 2024 here today.

The event was officiated by State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman.

Abd Rahim, who also heads the Johor Kite Flyers Association, said the response from the younger generation, especially school students, to wau-making workshops has been overwhelmingly positive, with many previously unfamiliar with traditional games or their crafting.

MPM also remains committed to ensuring that each kite festival features a variety of traditional wau from different states, while also introducing modern kites of various shapes and sizes to attract visitors, he added.

Earlier, Abdul Razak shared that over 100 local and international kite enthusiasts, including participants from Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore, had gathered in Melaka for the six-day festival, which kicked off yesterday.

He further expressed hopes that the festival would not only promote the art of kite flying but also boost tourist arrivals to the state in line with Visit Melaka Year 2024.
