Kelantan Teen Overcomes Car Accident To Begin USIM Journey

02/10/2024 08:41 PM

NILAI, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- An accident while on the way to Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) last night did not deter Hariz Zaimuddin, 19, from registering at the university, here, today.

Hariz, who hails from Pasir Mas, Kelantan, said he stayed up all night to settle matters after the accident near Gebeng, Pahang, but his goal of becoming a university student was realised when he reached USIM at 11.30 am for the new student registration session.

“Alhamdulillah, we are safe. I am thankful to the kind-hearted person who loaned us his car for me to register at USIM despite not knowing our family,” said Hariz who is pursuing a degree in Arabic Language and Islamic Literature when met at USIM.

Recounting the accident, Hariz, the eldest of six siblings said his father Zaimuddin Hassan, 48, lost control of the car he was driving from Pasir Mas, before veering off the road and crashing into the guardrail around midnight.

Hariz said when the accident happened, he and four other family members were sleeping and he was jolted awake when his head slammed against the air-conditioning unit.

“We were shocked, but I am grateful that I only sustained minor injuries to my head from the impact while my parents and siblings were not injured,” he said.

Hariz was among 2,718 new students for the 2024/2025 Academic Session who were offered places to pursue Bachelor’s degree programmes at USIM, with physical registration having started yesterday.

USIM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Sharifuddin Md Shaarani said for the first time this year, an Orang Asli student has secured a place at USIM, along with four students from the persons with disabilities (PwD) group.

Meanwhile, Orang Asli student, Nurul Atiqa Ithnani Idrus, 19, from Felda Tersang, Pahang, expressed her gratitude as her dream of furthering her studies at the Faculty of Dentistry in USIM has come true.

“It is common for dentists to visit Orang Asli villages to give treatments but my dream is to become one who can provide free dental care to the Orang Asli community,” said Nurul Atiqa who is the second of three siblings.
