LUNDU (Sarawak), Oct 8 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has proposed renaming the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) Aviation Academy here, to the Aerospace Academy to better reflect its expanded focus on both aviation and space industries.

He said the new name would be more fitting, as the academy's objectives extend beyond aviation to include space technology.

“We are collaborating with higher education institutions and international partners. For instance, Türkiye has demonstrated strong capabilities in defence and engineering,” he said during his speech at an event at the academy today.

Abang Johari also highlighted that the Sarawak government is working  with major industry players like Airbus and Boeing to strengthen industry connections and enhance the quality of education and training offered.

"Looking ahead, we aim to have our own satellite network, which will support economic development by providing valuable data,” he added.

At the event, Abang Johari witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between CENTEXS, the Aviation Design Centre (ADC) and i-CATS University College.

The agreement aims to enhance expertise and implement comprehensive talent development initiatives to produce skilled technicians and professionals who can meet the growing demands of the  Aviation and Aerospace sectors.

CENTEXS also announced that its Lundu campus will offer technical certification and technology programmes related to aviation for school leavers and graduates, while i-CATS will provide aerospace degree and postgraduate programmes.

The training will cover various areas, including helicopter maintenance, fixed-wing aircraft repair, avionics and aerospace manufacturing.
