PUTRAJAYA, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Standards Department (JSM) hopes the batik industry will use its updated Malaysian Standard (MS) 692 specification to produce quality products.

In conjunction with World Standards Day, the department held a consultation session today with industry players in Kota Bahru on the MS. The session was to shed light on the requirements and amendments in the draft MS 692 Batik Malaysia specification (third revision).

"The development of MS 692 Batik Malaysia is one of the efforts to strengthen and empower the Malaysian batik industry through the setting of comprehensive and practical standards," said a statement from JSM.

In addition, JSM informs that MS 692 is also an essential guide for all industry players, from batik operators to makers and designers to consumers.

"Our batik industry, with its history and heritage value, is not only important from the aspect of art and culture, but also as a potential economic resource. Therefore, this standard is not only intended to protect the quality and authenticity of batik, but also to expand market opportunities, domestically and internationally," said the statement.

JSM explained that the consultation session was also to obtain input and comments from the participants on the draft MS so that its content remains relevant and can be used by interested parties. It also explained the implementation and compliance issues of MS 692 Batik Malaysia.

It added that the session involved reviews and comments from government bodies, academics, and industry on the draft MS 692 Batik Malaysia, which the Working Group on Batik had developed.

World Standards Day, with the theme "Shared Vision for a Better World", is celebrated by all standardisation bodies around the world, including JSM, which is an initiative under international standardisation organisations such as the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

World Standards Day is celebrated to appreciate the efforts of experts involved in developing standards worldwide.

Established on Aug 28 1996, JSM is an agency under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) responsible for developing and promoting MS and providing accreditation services to compliance assessment bodies such as testing laboratories, certification bodies, and inspection bodies.
