KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Over 5,000 Islamic school and tahfiz students in the East Coast will gain from the 2024 Rehlah Sains (Science Excursion) Programme, organised by the National Science Centre (PSN) under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

MOSTI’s deputy secretary-general (Planning and Science Enculturation) Ruziah Shafei, said the initiative, part of the SciTech4U programme, aims to engage Islamic school and tahfiz students in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities, sparking their interest in these fields.

She said nine schools from the East Coast will participate, including Sekolah Menengah Agama Falahiah Sungai Sok in Kuala Krai, Maahad Tahfiz Sains Bustanul Arifin in Tumpat and Maahad Tahfiz Wal Tarbiyyah Darul Iman in Terengganu, adding that the programme runs until Oct 30.

"The PSN Trooperz On the Move mobile exhibition will tour for 15 days, bringing science directly to students in these locations" she said in a statement today.

Ruziah added that PSN will feature a range of interactive learning activities under the ‘Hands On, Minds On, Hearts On’ concept, aiming to inspire a passion for STEM while cultivating creative, innovative and competitive thinkers.

In addition, PSN director Mohammad Fuad Rahman said the programme adopts a holistic approach, combining STEM elements with religious values under the guidance of both STEM experts and religious mentors.

"Some of the interesting activities include the STEM Challenge, science demonstrations and workshops on astronomy that connect science with Islamic teachings. Participants will also be introduced to cutting-edge technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence (AI)," he said.

According to the statement, MOSTI and PSN are optimistic that the programme will serve as a catalyst for developing talent in science and technology while supporting the Malaysia MADANI agenda, which seeks to empower human capital in preparation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The programme is supported by several agencies, including the National Planetarium, the Department of Chemistry, the Atomic Energy Department and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, in collaboration with local agencies from Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.
