18/10/2024 06:34 PM

SIBU, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- Sarawak government through the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) will continue to provide strong support and commitment to the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) in organising the Malaysia Techlympics.

Its support in the implementation of the Malaysia Techlympics 2024 reflects Sarawak’s commitment to fostering a culture of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) among the local community where one of the main goals is to promote technology and innovation among the people of Sarawak, especially students and youths.

“The state government sees this programme as an excellent platform to showcase and introduce new technologies and innovations while also sparking the interest of the local community, particularly students and youths in the field of technology,” said Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of the Malaysia Techlympics 2024 Sarawak Zone at the Sibu Indoor Stadium here today, Sagah said he was pleased to see that Sarawak had an impressive turnout with 1,161 participants this year.

A total of 718 young Sarawakians, from 55 schools across the state, have advanced to the Sarawak Zone level today to compete for a spot in the National Grand Final scheduled to be held in Putrajaya on Nov 17 and 18.

The Malaysia Techlympics, a competition grounded in STI, is designed to help participants learn and apply the latest technologies through hands-on innovation projects such as robotics, drones, coding and more this year.

Sagah also urged teachers to stay active in STI-related activities and continue to support the Malaysia Techlympics through outreach programmes and online competitions which will run until mid-November.

He encouraged youths to take full advantage of the initiatives provided by the government, through MOSTI, particularly in driving forward various programmes and activities thus creating a comprehensive culture of STI and fostering greater awareness and engagement in the field.

Meanwhile, MOSTI deputy secretary-general (Planning and Science Enculturation) Ruziah Shafei said the Malaysia Techlympics also emphasises aspects of inclusion and inclusiveness by emphasising access to basic needs and quality education through outreach programmes that have been planned throughout the period of its implementation.

The programme, among other things, is aimed at improving access to STEM teaching and learning (PdP) in particular to rural students, teachers and local communities.

She said more than 127 teachers in Sarawak are also directly involved in the implementation of the outreach programmes through training or training of trainers physically and online.
