JPPA PKR Calls For Respectful Debate On Mufti Bill

23/10/2024 10:55 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- All parties, including religious scholars, are urged to maintain decorum and ethics when discussing issues related to the Mufti Bill (Federal Territories) 2024.

PKR’s Department of Religious Understanding and Strengthening (JPPA) director Amidi Abdul Manan said this was because debates on the Bill had begun to show excessive reactions.

He said that statements that mocked, belittled, or used harsh language only fueled animosity without resolving the matter.

"Every religious figure, along with their followers and supporters involved in this debate, should always strive to demonstrate the beauty of Islam, so that understanding Islam will further strengthen the love for its values and teachings," he said in a statement today.

He also called on all parties to grasp the original context of the Mufti Bill (Federal Territories) 2024 to ensure discussions did not stray from the original purpose of the Bill.

Amidi expressed confidence that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would address issues related to the Bill with the best interests of the Muslim community in mind.

"JPPA PKR highly appreciates and supports the efforts of the Federal Territories Mufti’s Office to organise engagement sessions to provide information and clarification on the Bill," he said.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar was previously reported as saying that the Mufti Bill (Federal Territories) 2024 would be tabled for its second and third readings during the current parliamentary session which began on Oct 14.

The Bill, among other things, defines the doctrine of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah based on the Al-Asyairah and Al-Maturidiah schools of thought.
