KPKM To Transform Poultry Farming For Efficiency, Sustainability

25/10/2024 09:49 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has agreed to transform the closed poultry farming system into an open method to increase production efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

KPKM, in a statement, said the agreement was adopted in a meeting on Tuesday between Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and state executive councillors in charge of the Agriculture portfolio at Menara Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladang (LPP) here.

It said the agreed transformation was in line with the National Agrofood Policy 2021-2030 (NAP 2.0), the National Food Security Policy Action Plan (DSMN Action Plan) 2021-2025, and the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDGs) to increase the growth and sustainability of the poultry industry.

"Cooperation between the Federal Government, state governments, state authorities and local authorities, as well as players in the poultry farming industry is very important in ensuring the success of the industry transformation so that the goal of Self-Sufficiency Rate (SSR) of chicken and eggs as outlined in NAP 2.0 can be achieved," the statement said.

KPKM said the meeting also took note of the Star Rating Index (STAR-Rating) of padi farmers through gradual implementation nationwide.

KPKM said the STAR-Rating programme was created to help plan and monitor the performance of padi fields and rice cultivation activities in an area as part of the efforts to transform the country's padi and rice industry. Padi fields are registered and classified according to status, capacity, productivity, and viability.

The statement added that the meeting also noted the Implementation Status of the Food Security Strengthening Programme 2024, with the government through Budget 2024 already approving an RM150 million allocation for implementing the development programme with state governments.

This involves programmes, repair and upgrading efforts, and the implementation of agricultural activities on land under joint jurisdiction between the state governments and KPKM.

"Until September this year, KPKM approved 83 projects in the states related to agricultural activities, livestock, fisheries, agro-tourism, capacity building of farmers, smallholders, fishermen and breeders," the ministry said.

KPKM said the meeting also expressed appreciation to the state governments for ensuring that the projects stated could be completed by year-end.

The ministry further added that the meeting was a platform for the Federal government's collaborative efforts with the state governments to strengthen the country's agricultural sector. This is in line with the food supply security agenda, which aims to drive economic growth and further improve the people's well-being.

"Through this initiative, productivity will be increased, support and service systems will be intensified, resources will be managed sustainably and investment and private sector involvement will continue to be encouraged," the statement said.
