APPGM Calls For Freedom Of Information Act To Strengthen Governance, Anti-Graft Efforts

04/11/2024 08:48 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) on Integrity, Governance and Anti-Corruption has proposed that the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) be prioritised in the legislative agenda to strengthen the transformation of other laws related to integrity, governance, and anti-corruption.

Group chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said that the act is crucial for fostering a culture of accountability, empowering the public, and ensuring informed participation in the country's democratic process.

“APPGM also does not see a clear timeline regarding amendments to the Whistleblower Protection Act and the Ombudsman  Act, which were previously expected to be tabled this year.

“The urgency for improvements will have a significant impact on preventing leakage and corruption in Malaysia,” he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

Syed Ibrahim, who is also Ledang Member of Parliament, said that these matters were among those discussed in the group's meeting on Oct 28, which focused on the status, timeline, and seriousness of the government in implementing institutional and legal reforms.

Regarding the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS), Syed Ibrahim said that APPGM along with government and opposition MPs, is committed to ensuring transparency and checks and balances in the implementation and compliance of the strategy involving all stakeholders.

He added that APPGM has also proposed important structural changes to achieve broader governance objectives, including the reform of government-linked investment companies (GLICs), enhanced oversight of mega projects, and the separation of sovereign wealth fund management from pension fund management.

“APPGM, together with MPs, expert colleagues, and civil society, will stand firm in the effort to achieve a governance system grounded in the principles of integrity and accountability.

“We urge all stakeholders to join us in realising these reforms, in a spirit of shared commitment towards a better Malaysia,” he said.
