KUANTAN, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- The Pahang Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MUIP) has channelled RM27.3 million to benefit the state's asnaf group, especially in the education sector, as of September.
MUIP chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Hairi Hussain said all the funds were derived from the Pahang people's tithe (zakat), and the council ensured that they were used for the well-being of Muslims.
He added that RM20.5 million was distributed to 18,960 students under the Bursary Assistance Scheme.
"In addition, a total of RM5 million was set aside for Institutes of Higher Learning (IPT) students' initial assistance, and to date, 4,887 students have benefited.
"The General Education Aid contribution to 26 primary and secondary school surau totalling RM878,125 was for promoting Islamic appreciation among Muslim students," he said.
Ahmad Hairi said this in his speech at the GNIUS Platform and Tablet award ceremony for Sekolah Menengah Ugama Majlis (SMUM) students and asnaf from Pahang here today.
At the ceremony, Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustaffa Billah Shah, together with the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, officiated the ceremony and presented tablets to the asnaf students.
Ahmad Hairi said MUIP also focused on General Education Assistance for 54 Sekolah Agama Rakyat, Quran and Fardhu Ain classes (RM245,085), General Education Assistance for four SMUMs (RM259,000), and cash distribution to 119 poor asnaf students who entered public universities (RM326,200).
In addition, 38 asnaf children received laptop assistance for their learning needs at public universities (RM96,000), and RM320,325 was distributed to 33 pondok schools and madrasahs in an effort to improve the quality of pondok education.
He said that in today's programme, RM330,000 in wakalah funds was disbursed to benefit 434 students from SMUM, YASA-MUIP Academy, Asnaf Children's Excellence Academy Classes (AKAF), and maahad tahfiz and pondok shools in Pahang.
