JITRA, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Darulaman Height has made Malaysia proud after being named the overall best team in the Primary School Science category at the 2024 World Mathematics & Science Competition (WMSC) held in Bogor, Indonesia from Nov 1-4.
The school’s accompanying teacher, Norlailawati Abd Razak, said the victory was made even sweeter as four of her students won three gold medals and a silver medal in the individual Primary School Science Quiz category against participants from four other countries - Bulgaria, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Malaysia sent 24 participants, with eight from Kedah, including the four students from SK Darulaman Height.
“This was our first time participating and it is truly a proud moment for us as four of our students won the overall best team award in the Primary School Science category.
“What’s even more impressive is that our 11-year-old student, Ahmad Hafiy Ukashah Khairul Faizi, won a silver medal in the Primary School Science category,” she told reporters at the award presentation ceremony today.
The three other students from the school who won gold medals in the same category were 12-year-olds Airell Qhaliff Zubir, Eishan Elias Rosidi and Mohamad Wafiy Mohamad Shahizan.
“Interestingly, our students were also the country’s young ambassadors. They showcased Malay heritage with their silat performance in traditional attire, earning thunderous applause from participants from other countries and gaining the judges’ attention,” she said.
Another accompanying teacher, Faizah Romli, said the participants overcame various challenges, including answering the quiz questions that were based on the syllabus for secondary school from Form One to Form Three.
Meanwhile, SK Darulaman Height headmaster Mafezzul Mohamad expressed pride in his students’ capabilities, especially since they had little time to prepare before departing for Indonesia.
“The commitment shown by the teachers and students was outstanding. Achieving excellent results with less than two weeks of preparations clearly showed their dedication and high level of commitment.
“I am extremely proud of everyone involved. We plan to further strengthen the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes at our school. We also plan to explore robotics and will prepare a team to participate in competitions in this new field, including at the international level,” he said.
