Embrace Higher-Value Activities To Stay Competitive, Says Penang Chief Minister

21/11/2024 04:09 PM

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has called on the state to embrace higher-value activities, such as integrated circuit design, technology development, and groundbreaking product innovations, to remain competitive in the global semiconductor market.

He emphasised that as global dynamics evolve, driven by geopolitical changes, trade barriers, and rapid advancements in technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), Penang must rise to meet new challenges.

“Penang, which has transformed into a global hub for manufacturing and technology over the past 52 years, has contributed significantly to Malaysia’s industrial growth.

“This transformation is a testament to our adaptability, attracting substantial foreign investments and fostering reinvestments,” Chow said in a press conference to announce the Penang International Science Fair 2024 (PISF), here today.

He added that the state government has taken proactive steps aimed at cultivating a new generation of engineers and technical professionals, such as the Chip Design Academy under the Penang STEM Talent Blueprint.

Chow stated that the journey begins earlier, emphasising the importance of strong science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) foundations at the primary and secondary education levels.

“In this regard, I commend the Penang Science Cluster (PSC) for its exemplary efforts in promoting STEM education which has made learning accessible, engaging, and impactful for thousands of students,” he said.

Chow said the PSC, in collaboration with the state government, would be organising the PISF 2024, a cornerstone of Penang’s commitment to advancing innovation and technology, from Nov 30-Dec 1 at SPICE Arena.

The event is anticipated to garner 40,000 to 60,000 attendees, and it will host over 30,000 hands-on workshop slots with 53 types of workshops, cutting-edge industry exhibits, and dynamic competitions.

“Supported by 71 companies, organisations and institutions, PISF is a testament to what we can achieve when education, industry, and the community come together.

“This year’s theme, ‘Inspiring Innovation Everywhere (in the Age of Al)’, highlights the transformative potential of AI and the imperative to make these technologies accessible to all,” the chief minister said.
