KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has supported the Education Ministry’s (MOE) decision to proceed with the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination despite the floods and expressed hope that the public will not turn the issue into polemics.

Its secretary-general, Fauzi Singon, said the decision was made after considering the preparations ranging from developing questions, printing, distribution, and marking of examination papers to the announcement of results have been carefully considered, in addition to measures such as the standard operating procedure under Op Payung.

“Examination dates have also been coordinated with higher education institutions. The large number of examination papers must also be taken into account. If the SPM examination is to be postponed due to flooding, the time needed to reschedule must also be considered.

“Changes or amendments cannot be made randomly as various parties are involved,” he said in a statement here.

Fauzi said MOE is always on alert and takes necessary measures, including working closely with security agencies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of candidates and exam personnel.

A total of 402,956 candidates have registered to sit for the SPM examination this year.

Yesterday, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that the SPM examination, which began with the Malay Language Oral Test, proceeded smoothly across the country with no candidates left out, even those in flood-ravaged states.

Through Op Payung, affected SPM candidates are accommodated in selected hostels, and those unable to return to their home states are allowed to sit for exams at designated examination centres.
