Pahang Assemblyman Proposes Takaful Scheme To Aid Farmers Affected By Natural Disasters

04/12/2024 04:22 PM

KUANTAN, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- An assemblyman today proposed that a takaful scheme be introduced to assist small- and medium-scale farmers who suffer losses from crop destruction caused by natural disasters.

Ho Chi Yang (DAP-Tanah Rata) said the initiative should be introduced to ease the burden on farmers who did not have enough capital to resume planting activities after a disaster.

He cited the recent launch of the Padi Crop Takaful by Agrobank as an example, explaining that it was a scheme designed to help farmers who suffer damage or loss to padi crops due to natural disasters, pests, and diseases.

“The initiative is a crucial and strategic move, as it can reduce the risk of unexpected losses and lighten the burden on farmers. Therefore, I suggest that such a takaful scheme be launched to include many farmers, including those in Cameron Highlands.

“It aims to improve the safety net, particularly by reducing the significant losses caused by disasters and enabling farmers to continue investing in boosting productivity,” he said during the debate on the 2025 Pahang Budget at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

Ho also suggested that a small portion of the rental collection by Pahang Corporation be set aside to establish the Cameron Highlands agricultural disaster fund, which could be used to ease the burden on farmers in the event of a disaster.

The state assembly sitting continues tomorrow.
