ALLIANZ MALAYSIA, UM LAUNCH GOVERNANCE CENTRE TO TACKLE CORRUPTION AT GRASSROOTS LEVEL

PETALING JAYA, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- Allianz Malaysia Berhad and Universiti Malaya (UM) today launched the Allianz Centre for Governance (ACFG), a strategic initiative aimed at conducting research on governance and related areas to address graft practices at the grassroots level.

Located at the UM's Faculty of Business and Economics, the centre will serve as a platform for academic research and public engagement, focusing on strengthening business integrity and supporting governance reforms.

Allianz Malaysia regional chief executive officer Anusha Thavarajah said trust forms the foundation of Allianz's reputation, adding that the confidence placed in the company by its customers, shareholders, and communities is both a privilege and responsibility.

“Our strict adherence to the Allianz Code of Conduct underscores our zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and bribery," she said during the launch ceremony at the university's Za’ba Memorial Library here today.

“This stance isn’t just about compliance with local and international laws; it reflects our belief that combating corruption is fundamental to promoting good governance and ensuring a sustainable future. Allianz is a trusted insurer." 

Also present at the ceremony were Allianz Malaysia chairman Zakri Mohd Khir and chief executive officer Sean Wang Wee Keong, UM deputy cice-chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Dr Yatimah Alias, and Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, UM, Professor Dr Yusniza Kamarulzaman.

Meanwhile, Anusha said corruption is not confined to specific industries, with the insurance sector being no exception. She highlighted that Allianz’s business is built on protection and trust, noting that the company not only protects its policyholders but also the integrity of the systems and societies it operates in.

“Good governance safeguards public resources, ensures ethical practices and fuels national growth. When Allianz entities take the lead on initiatives like this, they truly walk the talk, demonstrating the shared values that unite us across the region,” she said.

She described the ACFG as a bold and vital step forward, with a clear mission to engage stakeholders, champion reform, and promote accountability across sectors.

“This initiative reflects our understanding that large organisations like Allianz must lead by example, collaborating with governments, businesses, civil society and the media,” she added.

In the meantime, Dr Yatimah commended Allianz Malaysia for focusing on good governance, noting that the centre would strengthen knowledge and practices, benefitting national leadership, corporate sectors, civil society, and other groups in shaping a better nation.

“In today’s economic and social context, good governance is no longer an option but a necessity," she said

“Without a doubt, the establishment of this centre will further accelerate efforts to enhance the quality of governance, ensuring continued transparency.

“I am confident this collaboration will foster a strong synergy between UM and our industry partner, Allianz Malaysia, to jointly achieve our shared vision and mission,” she also said.

Speaking to reporters, Wang said that as a corporate entity, Allianz Malaysia’s purpose extends beyond profits, prioritising initiatives that create positive societal impacts.

“We have lined up initiatives related to good governance for the next generation and will explore more opportunities to collaborate with other educational institutions,” he added.
