31/12/2024 08:49 PM

PASIR MAS, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- The rising water levels in Sungai Golok, which are expected to increase sharply, have raised concerns in the Rantau Panjang Free Trade Zone here.

To avoid potential losses, traders have quickly moved their goods to higher ground.

A Bernama check found the area quiet, with many shops closed as traders secured their merchandise, showing preparedness for any unforeseen circumstances.

Slipper and doll trader Nurul Atikah Adli, 21, said she moved her goods to higher ground and closed her shop earlier than usual due to the rising water levels in Sungai Golok.

"During the flood last November, I was shocked when the water reached waist level, causing significant losses," she said.

Meanwhile, Rantau Panjang Malay Traders Association chairman Ramli Abdullah, said most traders are closing their businesses until the floodwaters recede, as a precaution to stay vigilant.

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage reported that, as of 7.30 pm today, the water level in Sungai Golok had exceeded the danger level of 10.15 metres, well above the normal level of five metres.
