Study, Design Work For Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway Underway

03/01/2025 02:47 PM

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- The study and design work for the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway project has commenced, with completion expected within a year.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the physical implementation of the Juru-Sungai Dua traffic dispersal project will commence after the implementing agency completes the study and design phase.

“Typically, such projects start with study and design work, which usually takes at least a year (to complete). At this stage, the implementing agency has already begun its work.

“I have been informed that the allocation for the project has been provided this year, including funds for consultancy work,” he told reporters today.

He said this after witnessing the oath-taking ceremony for 24 councillors from the Seberang Perai City Council (MPSP) for 2025, at the Menara MBSP.

Chow said the construction of the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway project will take at least five years, with funding to be allocated this year.

“Previously, the project was estimated to cost RM2.7 billion, but we now need to wait for an official announcement from the Works Ministry. PLUS (PLUS Malaysia Berhad) will likely be involved in this project, as it falls within the North-South Expressway.

“Major projects like the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway and the Penang Perak Water Project, which I have advocated for, are becoming a reality. These projects take several years to implement, but have received the necessary approvals and are being carried out in phases,” he said, adding that all these projects are for the people's benefit.

The Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway is one of several important initiatives for Penang announced by Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the tabling of Budget 2025, on Oct 18 last year. Other initiatives include the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT), the expansion of the Penang International Airport (LTAPP), and the Batu Kawan 3 Industrial Park.

Chow previously said that the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway project is expected to be implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP), involving PLUS Malaysia Berhad, the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS), and several related agencies, currently under review.
