MELAKA, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government is expanding its Insurance Protection Scheme to include tok jekerah and tok jenang (customary and community leaders) in recognition of their service to the Orang Asli community and the state.
Asahan assemblyman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan said that the RM30,000 insurance protection per person, which came into effect this month, would benefit 28 tok jekerah and tok jenang from 14 Orang Asli villages statewide.
This initiative was approved during the recent State Legislative Assembly sitting, he added.
“As the state constituency with the largest number of Orang Asli communities, I believe this is the right move, as previously, insurance protection was only provided to tok batin (village heads).
“This initiative is crucial as tok jekerah and tok jenang also play key roles in providing vital services to the local community, including ensuring the welfare of people in their villages,” he said at the launch of the Chief Minister’s Cup 2025 at the Terendak Camp Shooting Range in Sungai Udang here today.
In the meantime, Fairul Nizam, who is also the State Science, Technology, Innovation, Digital and Communications Committee chairman, said the one-off schooling assistance for Orang Asli children in Melaka would be increased to RM100 from RM50, starting this year.
“We hope that the increase in the aid will motivate these Orang Asli children to study harder and pursue further education,” he said.
