MOT Adopts Zero-Tolerance Policy On Integrity Issues, Says Loke

13/01/2025 06:05 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- The Transport Ministry (MoT) maintains a no-compromise and zero-tolerance approach to integrity issues involving enforcement officers under its jurisdiction, its minister Anthony Loke said.

He said integrity issues are a significant challenge currently faced by the ministry.

“When it comes to integrity issues, MoT is always ready to cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), as seen recently when we exposed a corruption syndicate involving the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom).

“If such issues arise and we know they need to be addressed, we will monitor the information. JPJ (Road Transport Department) has its intelligence unit.

“We will conduct surveillance and work closely with the MACC,” he said during the launch of the LogTech and TalentBridge research laboratory at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaya today.

Loke said that JPJ has been mandated to intensify efforts to identify integrity breaches involving enforcement officers who violate rules and regulations.

He said the challenges faced by the ministry necessitate the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance vehicle enforcement efforts in the country.

This includes the use of the High Speed - Weight in Motion (HS-WIM) system to automatically monitor the load of heavy vehicles. The system is expected to be operational in the third quarter of this year.

“Syndicates are constantly finding ways to bypass our enforcement measures. That’s why using technology or AI is crucial, as it enables us to strengthen our enforcement capabilities,” he said.

He said with HS-WIM, heavy vehicles will no longer need to be taken to weighing stations. Instead, the technology, equipped with sensors, can detect whether a vehicle is overloaded as it passes through areas installed with the system.

The minister also encouraged more transport companies to collaborate with public universities to research and find better solutions to challenges faced by the industry.

“This strategic collaboration allows private companies to expose students to practical, real-world industry challenges, while students can apply their knowledge and skills to solve these issues.

Loke said by leveraging AI and computer science, more data can be integrated and analysed.

“Currently, we are very focused on safety issues. AI systems, for example, can make port operations more efficient, such as in calculating materials and the quantity of goods unloaded at ports,” he added.
