PUTRAJAYA, Jan 17 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry (MOH) has revoked the notification of the cosmetic product 'JL Fara Seaweed' because it was found to contain mercury, which is a scheduled poison, and is no longer allowed to be sold in Malaysia.
As such, the ministry urged the public to refrain from buying the product, while the product sellers and distributors stopped their sales and distribution immediately.
"The sale and distribution of the cosmetic product violate the Control of Drug and Cosmetics Regulations 1984," said the ministry in a statement today.
Mercury is prohibited in cosmetic products because it can be absorbed into the body and can cause damage to the kidneys and nervous system, as well as interfere with the brain development of young or unborn children.
Individuals who commit an offence under the Drugs and Cosmetics Control Regulations 1984 may be subject to a maximum fine of RM25,000 or imprisonment not exceeding three years or both for the first offence and a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both- both for subsequent offences.
For a company, it can be fined up to RM50,000 for the first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
Members of the public who are currently using the cosmetic product are advised to immediately stop using it and seek advice from a health professional if they experience any discomfort or adverse effects.
