SHAH ALAM, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) aims to assist 94,000 asnaf families and lift 4,500 individuals out of poverty, across the state throughout 2025, according to its Board of Trustees chairman Tan Sri Syed Anwar Jamalullail.
This reflects LZS’s ongoing commitment to empowering the underprivileged through various development programmes, which have already seen over 4,000 zakat (tithe) recipients surpassing the ‘haddul kifayah’ (economic sufficiency for survival) threshold in the past year, he revealed.
He emphasised that LZS’s strategy is focused on fostering self-sufficiency among asnaf, offering not just temporary aid, but long-term solutions, in areas such as personal development, entrepreneurship, career advancement and higher education.
“This is a testament to the effectiveness of our efforts,” he said during the launch of the Sultan Idris Shah Zakat Tower in Section 14, here, today.
The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, graced the opening ceremony of the building, which houses LZS’s new headquarters.
Syed Anwar added that after 30 years, LZS, as the sole institution managing zakat in Selangor, has distributed over RM11 billion to those in need since its establishment in 1994.
“Last year alone, we supported nearly 80,000 asnaf families and over 5,000 new Muslim converts, including registering 13,000 new families for assistance,” he said.
On the new headquarters, he explained that the 14-story tower is designed to meet the needs of asnaf and muzakki (zakat payers), with an average of 100 to 120 visitors daily. The building serves as a one-stop centre, integrating all services to ensure more efficient service delivery.
Since moving into the new premises on Sept 23 last year, the tower has also featured drive-through counters for zakat collection and distribution, self-service kiosks for easy zakat payments or applications, a seminar hall for training and courses to uplift the asnaf community.
