ANGKASA Lights Up TERKL Canopy Walk In Support Of National Greening Initiative

26/01/2025 07:33 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- The National Cooperative Movement of Malaysia (Angkasa) is dedicated to enhancing Malaysia's national greening initiative  and as part of this, they will install lighting along the Canopy Walk pathway at Taman Eko Rimba Kuala Lumpur (TERKL).

It is part of Angkasa's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme to celebrate the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) 2025. It will be done with the Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department and the Federal Territory Forestry Department.

Angkasa Board Member Datuk Kamarudin Ismail said the initiative supports the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.

"This is another initiative by Angkasa to enhance the appeal of promoting eco-tourism at TERKL, the only green lung area in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

"This initiative also symbolises our collective effort to position TERKL as a preferred destination, not only locally but internationally, especially in conjunction with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025," he told reporters after opening the Malaysia Greening Programme CSR CoopCare and Canopy Walk Lighting in conjunction with IYC 2025 and S@TER Series 1 here today.

Kamarudin, an International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) Board Member, said RM30,000 had been allocated for the pilot lighting project.

"If it receives a good response, we may invite other agencies to collaborate," he added.

Commenting on the IYC 2025 theme, 'Cooperatives Build a Better World,' he said it reflects the cooperative sector's contribution as a fair and compassionate economic and social model, in line with Malaysia MADANI's aspirations.

"As the apex body of Malaysia's cooperative movement, overseeing 16,009 cooperatives with 7.2 million members nationwide, Angkasa has the capacity for economic, social, and environmental development through collective initiatives," he said.

Since 2021, Angkasa has implemented 36 Malaysia Greening: Caring Cooperatives Million Trees programmes, which involved planting nearly 6,000 trees and over 10,000 participants.

Additionally, Angkasa, in collaboration with the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (KUSKOP), the Cooperative Commission of Malaysia (SKM), and the Cooperative Institute of Malaysia (IKMa), has planned various programmes for IYC 2025.

The programmes include the ASEAN Cooperative Dialogue 2025, National Cooperative Empowerment Convention, Coop Treasure Hunt 2025, National Cooperative Month, National Cooperative Day, and the Youth for Cooperative Futures Seminar.
