KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- All Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers have ample opportunities to explore the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) that align with their interests and aptitudes, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The National TVET Council chairman said Malaysia boasts 1,398 TVET institutions, comprising 673 public institutions, 697 private institutions, and 28 institutions under state governments, adding that this dynamic ecosystem offers a wide range of skills relevant to the current industry needs and the job market.
Ahmad Zahid congratulated the 402,956 SPM candidates who completed the examination today for their effort and determination.
"However, SPM is not the end but a beginning to a new phase in life. It is time for the students to determine the direction of their future whether in pursuing higher education or a career," he said in a statement.
Elaborating, the Rural and Regional Development Minister said the opportunity to further studies in TVET is available throughout the year with flexible options through the UP_TVET system.
Ahmad Zahid said UP_TVET Flexi, available since last month, allows individuals to undergo modular and flexible skills training at their own pace, noting that applications under UP_TVET Perdana for full-time courses for the July intake will open in April this year.
He said the Rural and Regional Ministry (KKDW), the main driver of skilled workforce development in rural areas, offers 529 programmes ranging from certificate to doctoral degrees, covering 15 clusters relevant to the current job market through 280 of its institutions.
He said the institutions include Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), Community Development Department (KEMAS), Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA), Penang Regional Development Authority (PERDA), Kedah Regional Development Authority (KEDA), Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA) and Central Terengganu Development Authority (KETENGAH).
"The KKDW TVET Education System framework has produced many skilled workers, professionals, technologists, and successful entrepreneurs. The employability rate of KKDW TVET graduates reached 98 per cent in 2024, proving that TVET provides broad employment opportunities and helps shape a brighter future.
"The government is committed to ensuring access to quality education and skills training for all levels of society. Therefore, I urge students and parents to seize this opportunity to build a sustainable and competitive career," he added.
