KUCHING, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- The dilapidated Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Batu Putih Baru in Sandakan, Sabah, is set for an upgrade and reconstruction, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said.
In a statement today, he said the RM43.89 million project has been awarded to Eastbourne Corporation Bhd, and construction period is slated for 217 weeks, with an expected completion date in April 2029.
The project involves demolishing the existing dilapidated structures and building an 18-classroom academic block, an administration block, a preschool block, a canteen and other facilities.
“Additionally, three existing blocks will be upgraded to provide a safe, comfortable and conducive environment for 43 teachers, five staff members and 520 students,” he added.
Nanta said under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12), the Public Works Department (JKR) is responsible for implementing 92 Education Ministry projects in Sabah and 36 in Sarawak.
He also stressed the importance of timely completion and adherence to cost and quality standards, urging contractors to prioritise safety and meet the government’s specifications.
"JKR is also tasked with monitoring work quality and assessing the contractor's performance for the benefit and well-being of the people," he added.
