Digital Transformation An Ongoing Effort To Enhance Public Service Efficiency, Says JPA

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- The Public Service Department (JPA) is continuously exploring the best approaches to integrating automation and digital transformation to ensure civil servants are prepared for new roles in a dynamic work environment.

In a statement, the department said modernisation efforts must be carefully planned to ensure workforce sustainability in the long term.

“Ongoing government initiatives such as competency-based training programmes and digital adoption reflect JPA’s commitment to preparing civil servants for the future,” the department said.

JPA issued the statement in response to former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s suggestion that the government consider establishing a Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), similar to the one implemented in the United States.

DOGE is an advisory committee led by Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk, aimed at reducing federal spending to improve government efficiency. Since its establishment, the committee has been reviewing government financial flows.

According to JPA, in conjunction with the ASEAN Convention 2025, the department will organise the ‘Future-Ready Public Service Conference’ on Oct 7 and 8 to strengthen civil servants' competitiveness and capabilities in facing global challenges.

“This initiative will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, sharing best practices and fostering regional cooperation to develop a more innovative, responsive and sustainable public service,” the statement read.

JPA said it has long prioritised efficiency and has proactively implemented various initiatives to enhance workforce capabilities through reskilling, upskilling, skill diversification mastering new competencies, and strategic redeployment.

The department also remains open to constructive discussions and welcomes input from various sectors, including the private sector, to strengthen public service efficiency without compromising its primary mission of serving the people.

“JPA appreciates public interest in this matter and will continue striving to ensure an efficient and viable public service in line with the ongoing Public Service Reform Agenda,” it said further.
