KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Yayasan Bank Rakyat (YBR) and Universiti Keusahawanan Koperasi Malaysia (UKKM) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today to sponsor scholarships for students at the university with an allocation of RM4.08 million for three years.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, who spoke at the MoU signing today, said that the initiative would not only help students, but also empower the cooperatives and entrepreneurial sector as a catalyst of national socio-economic development.
“This partnership between YBR and UKKM will also motivate and spur students to harness the cooperatives and entrepreneurial fields as agents of change,” he said, and expressed his hope that the MoU would turn UKKM into an institution of choice for youth furthering their studies.
YBR chief executive officer Syaiful Rizal Abdul Ghani and UKKM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Azali Mohamed signed the MoU at a ceremony at Menara Kembar Bank Rakyat, witnessed by Ewon, YBR chairman Datuk Philip Benedict Lasimbang and UKKM chairman UKKM Datuk Dr Rosli Mat Hassan.
The scholarships will benefit 35 UKKM students annually from 2025 to 2027 to further their studies in the entrepreneurship and cooperatives management at the diploma and bachelor’s degree levels.
Meanwhile, Philip in his speech said the partnership between YBR and UKKM was in line with the foundation’s initiative to help students with potential to a fair education and was suited with its vision and objectives.
“YBR will always support a holistic ecosystem of cooperatives and entrepreneurship to support the national socio-economic development agenda towards a planned and integrated entrepreneurship,” he said.
From 2008 till last year, 7,468 students have been offered the YBR’s variable education financing with a total allocation of RM212.43 million.
