KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s (CAAM) decision to mandate permits for all drone operators before flying their devices is a crucial step in safeguarding national airspace security.
Malaysian Skills Foundation president Datuk P. Sri Ganes said the move aligns with regulatory efforts to prevent the misuse of drone technology, which could pose security threats such as espionage, smuggling, and intrusion into restricted areas.
“This is not just a regulatory measure but a crucial step in addressing the risks of irresponsible drone use,” he said in a statement today.
Recently, CAAM required all drone operators, whether for low- or high-risk operations, commercial or recreational use to obtain a permit before flying.
The requirement also applies to any drone or unmanned aircraft equipped with a camera and operating below 122 metres.
Sri Ganes, who is also SG Education Group CEO, urged the government to take a firm approach, similar to other countries, by imposing heavy fines and equipment confiscation to prevent misuse.
“Without strict enforcement, security breaches could lead to even tighter regulations, potentially stifling the growth of Malaysia’s drone industry,” he warned.
He added that over 2,500 drone-related incidents involving near-collisions with aircraft have been reported by international aviation bodies.
However, countries with stringent drone training and certification programmes, such as the United States (FAA Part 107) and Europe (EASA), have reported lower rates of drone-related accidents and violations.
“If Malaysia fails to enforce proper training and certification, it risks falling behind in the regional drone industry and losing economic opportunities to neighbouring countries with stricter and safer regulations,” he said.
Sri Ganes also highlighted that the global drone industry is projected to reach USD 54 billion (RM240 billion) by 2030, with Malaysia strategically positioned to emerge as a leader in the sector.
He stressed that strict enforcement of permits and certification is not a barrier to progress but the foundation for a safe, professional, and innovative drone industry.
