MELAKA, March 7 (Bernama) -- The flood situation in Melaka has improved significantly, with the number of victims in Jasin declining to 180 people from 50 families by 4 pm today, down from 330 people from 93 families this morning.
Melaka Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lt Col (PA) Kamarulsyah Muslim said the flood situation in the Melaka Tengah district has fully stabilised, with all temporary relief centres now officially closed.
The displaced victims are being sheltered in three relief centres, namely Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dang Anum, SMK Dato' Abdul Rahman and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Parit Penghulu, he said in a statement today.
Eighty-four people from 22 families are housed at SMK Dang Anum; 89 people from 25 families at SMK Dato' Abdul Rahman; and seven victims from three families at SK Parit Penghulu, he added.
Kamarulsyah said the affected communities are from Kampung Kilang Berapi Utara, Kampung Kilang Berapi Barat, Kampung Merlimau Pasir and Batu Gajah.
The flooding was caused by heavy rainfall lasting over an hour, beginning at 11 pm on Wednesday.
