Cockle And Mussel Production Rises, Oyster Output Falls In 2024 – DoF

07/03/2025 10:22 PM

PUTRAJAYA, March 7 (Bernama) -- The shellfish industry experienced positive growth in 2024, with cockle production rising from 15,147.76 tonnes in 2023 to 16,198.96 tonnes in 2024.

Mussel production also saw an increase, increasing from 2,436.54 tonnes to 3,637.93 tonnes over the same period.

“Although oyster production declined slightly from 169.43 tonnes to 132.14 tonnes, overall, the shellfish industry is thriving with total production increasing from 17,776.03 tonnes in 2023 to 20,290.75 tonnes in 2024,” said Department of Fisheries (DOF) director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain in a statement today.

Cockle farming in Malaysia is primarily conducted through semi-aquaculture, with cockle spats sourced from natural habitats, however, farmers face challenges in managing water quality, which can impact growth rates and yields.

Adnan said DOF has introduced the Cockle Farm Project as a strategic initiative to boost national production and systematically develop existing mudflats to ensure the sustainability of the shellfish industry.

“The project has proven to be successful in improving the economic status of coastal communities. We remain committed to supporting farmers through training and modern technology,” he said.

He highlighted a DOF study showing that the Cockle Farming Project in Lekir, Perak, has improved the coastal community’s economy, where within a year, the percentage of participants in the B40 category dropped from 87.3 percent to 67.3 percent, while those in the M40 category saw their income rise from 8.9 percent to 27.4 percent.

Although the shellfish aquaculture industry shows promising potential for growth, challenges such as supply and demand imbalance, price inflation, overhavesting, and production remain key issues.

“DOF continues to strengthen the industry by utilising modern technology in stock monitoring, water management, and breeding systems,” he said.

The DOF is also enhancing collaboration with state governments and related agencies to ensure comprehensive infrastructure development and the availability of financial assistance for farmers, he added.
