KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 (Bernama) -- Strong collaboration between state zakat boards and mosque institutions as well as residents' associations can ensure zakat is better channelled to those in need, says International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) economist Prof Dr Baharom Abdul Hamid.
He said these institutions could help provide accurate information to the zakat boards regarding those genuinely in need and assess the effectiveness of aid distribution.
"Additionally, these institutions can supply up-to-date information on asnaf (eligible zakat recipients) who have moved out of poverty. We need just one platform—meaning we should not work in silos," he said as a guest on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme tonight.
Baharom said that through partnerships with relevant institutions and agencies, zakat boards could ensure that human capital and entrepreneurial development aid, such as business capital and equipment like sewing machines, is fully utilised by asnaf.
"Aid distribution should not stop once it is given; there needs to be a sustainable plan. This means that when we distribute items or money, we must ensure asnaf have a support system—this is crucial to ensure continuity.
"When aid is given, there should be an action plan, financial literacy training, skill development, and market access—only then can we provide holistic assistance. There must be a comprehensive plan that works in tandem with existing agencies," he added.
