KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and Diamond Gas Holdings Sdn Bhd (DGH), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, have signed a project collaboration agreement to advance zero-carbon energy and sustainable mobility under UTP's Green Campus Initiative.
In a statement, UTP explained that the agreement was built upon a Memorandum of Understanding signed between UTP and Mitsubishi Corporation in February 2025, aimed at deepening collaboration in clean energy innovation.
"This partnership also opens a new chapter in the longstanding UTP-Mitsubishi relationship, which began with the establishment of the Mitsubishi Chair of Green Energy at UTP in 2009," it said.
Under the collaboration, UTP and DGH will undertake three flagship initiatives, including a joint study on implementing Carbon Offsetting via Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to support Malaysia's decarbonisation goals.
Another initiative is the launch of an Autonomous On-Demand E-Mobility (AOEM), a pilot project focused on developing and testing autonomous electric vehicle systems within the UTP campus, creating a research platform for sustainable transport solutions.
"It will also focus on captive Solar Power with Battery Storage by implementation of decentralised solar energy infrastructure to enhance energy resilience and reduce carbon footprint on campus," it said.
The partnership extends beyond campus boundaries, supporting national objectives such as EV infrastructure development, establishing a Centre of Excellence at UTP and creating scalable sustainability models for urban areas, including Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur.
"Together, UTP, DGH and Mitsubishi Corporation are fostering innovation, education and collaboration to accelerate Malaysia's journey toward a low-carbon, technology-driven future," the statement said.
Meanwhile, UTP president Mohamed Firouz Asnan said the collaboration reflected their commitment to shaping the future of sustainable mobility.
"Together with Diamond Gas Holdings, we are advancing research into autonomous electric vehicles, using our campus as a living lab to test, refine and scale next-generation mobility solutions," he said in the same statement.
He added that the strategic collaboration enhanced UTP's research capabilities in clean energy and smart transport while providing DGH and Mitsubishi with access to academic expertise and a pipeline of future-ready talent, driving real-world progress in Malaysia's low-carbon transition.
