PUTRAJAYA, July 2 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Indonesia will resume their annual consultation, which was last held in 2017, said Unity Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his delegation are scheduled to visit Jakarta on July 29 to attend the consultation and events related to the ASEAN Secretariat.
According to him, the decision to resume the annual consultation was reached during the Prime Minister’s visit to Indonesia and his meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto last Friday (June 27).
“The discussion with the Indonesian President was held in a very lively, positive atmosphere. Among the matters discussed was the plan to resume the annual consultation between the leaders of both countries.
“The Prime Minister and his delegation will travel to Jakarta, Insya-Allah, on July 29 for the consultation session and events related to the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta,” he said at a press conference here today.
Fahmi said the session would serve as the best platform for leaders of both nations to exchange views and chart the way forward on key issues involving Malaysia and Indonesia, including the Ambalat maritime boundary.
“The Ambalat issue has been ongoing for over two to three decades. It’s not something new, and I expect it will be among the matters discussed. But as the Prime Minister mentioned, many factors need to be considered, including technical issues.
“So we expect the discussions at the end of July to be the beginning, not the conclusion, in resolving the issue,” he said.
Previously, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated that Malaysia would seek a win-win outcome with Indonesia regarding the Ambalat border issue.
Earlier media reports said Anwar and Prabowo had affirmed both countries’ commitment to accelerating strategic cooperation in various fields, including a peaceful resolution of the Ambalat dispute and mutually beneficial joint development in the maritime border region.
